Rust Prevention
Section titled “Rust Prevention”The E46 has several areas prone to rust, especially in salt-belt climates.
Common Rust Locations
Section titled “Common Rust Locations”- Rear wheel arches (inner fender)
- Front fender lower edges
- Jack point pinch welds
- Door bottoms
- Trunk lid inner surface
- Battery tray (acid leaks)
- Subframe mounting points
- Spare tire well
Prevention
Section titled “Prevention”- Regular washing (especially undercarriage in winter)
- Cavity wax spray in hollow sections
- Touch-up paint on stone chips immediately
- Undercoating treatment (POR-15, Fluid Film)
- Address any paint damage before rust starts
- Drain holes must be kept clear
Repair
Section titled “Repair”- Surface rust: Sand, prime, paint
- Structural rust: Cut out and weld in new metal
- Professional rust repair recommended for structural areas
