Starter Motor
The starter motor is mounted to the bell housing at the rear of the engine, engaging the flywheel ring gear to crank the engine.

- Location: Between engine and transmission, accessible from below
Failure Symptoms
Section titled “Failure Symptoms”- Clicking noise when turning key (solenoid engaging but motor not spinning)
- Grinding noise (worn Bendix gear)
- Slow cranking (worn motor or low battery)
- No response when turning key (check EWS, starter relay, and battery connections)
Diagnosis Sequence
Section titled “Diagnosis Sequence”- Check battery voltage (greater than 12.4V)
- Check battery terminal connections (clean and tight)
- Check starter relay (E-box)
- Check EWS system (immobilizer must authorize start)
- Test starter motor directly to rule out wiring
Replacement Notes
Section titled “Replacement Notes”- Access from underneath the vehicle
- Disconnect battery before working on starter
- Transmission may need to be supported slightly to gain access
