Starter Motor

The starter motor is mounted to the bell housing at the rear of the engine, engaging the flywheel ring gear to crank the engine.

  • Location: Between engine and transmission, accessible from below
  • Clicking noise when turning key (solenoid engaging but motor not spinning)
  • Grinding noise (worn Bendix gear)
  • Slow cranking (worn motor or low battery)
  • No response when turning key (check EWS, starter relay, and battery connections)
  1. Check battery voltage (greater than 12.4V)
  2. Check battery terminal connections (clean and tight)
  3. Check starter relay (E-box)
  4. Check EWS system (immobilizer must authorize start)
  5. Test starter motor directly to rule out wiring
  • Access from underneath the vehicle
  • Disconnect battery before working on starter
  • Transmission may need to be supported slightly to gain access
