Connectors and Pins
The E46 uses various connector types throughout the vehicle. Understanding connector types helps with diagnosis and repair.
Common Connector Types
Section titled “Common Connector Types”- Black round connectors: Engine sensors and actuators
- Green/gray rectangular connectors: Body modules
- White multi-pin connectors: Instrument cluster and large module connectors
- Blue connector: OBD-II port
- Yellow connectors: Airbag system (SRS) — do not disconnect with battery connected
Connector Issues
Section titled “Connector Issues”- Pin corrosion from moisture ingress
- Terminal back-out from vibration
- Melted connectors from overheating (especially at tail light assemblies)
- Broken locking tabs
Repair
Section titled “Repair”BMW-specific connector pins and housings are available from specialized suppliers. Use proper pin removal tools to avoid damaging connectors.
