- Read codes — VANOS-specific codes point to the system
- Cold start test — Listen for rattle on first start of the day
- INPA/ISTA adaptation values — Check VANOS deviation
- Oil condition — Dirty or low oil worsens VANOS symptoms
- Solenoid test — Measure resistance (should be ~7-8 ohms)
- Visual inspection — Check solenoid wiring and connectors
- Worn VANOS seals (most common)
- Failed VANOS solenoid
- Low oil level or degraded oil
- Clogged oil passages
- Worn VANOS unit internals
