DIY: Oil Change

The M54 engine holds 6.5 liters of oil with filter. This is the most basic and important maintenance item.

Parts Needed

• 7 liters 5W-30 (BMW LL-01 approved)
• Oil filter element (Mann HU925/4x or OE 11 41 7 837 131)
• Drain plug crush washer (07 11 9 963 151)

Procedure

1. Warm engine to operating temperature (5 min drive)
2. Raise front of vehicle and secure on jack stands
3. Place drain pan under oil pan
4. Remove drain plug with 6mm Allen key
5. Allow oil to drain completely (~10 minutes)
6. Remove oil filter housing cap with 32mm wrench
7. Remove old filter element, clean housing
8. Install new filter element with new O-rings (included)
9. Reinstall filter cap — torque to 25 Nm
10. Install drain plug with new crush washer — torque to 25 Nm
11. Lower vehicle
12. Fill with 6.5 liters of oil through oil filler cap
13. Start engine, check for leaks
14. Check oil level on dipstick — should be between marks
15. Reset oil service indicator

Oil Service Reset

1. Key to position 1 (accessories)
2. Press and hold odometer reset button
3. Key to position 2 (ignition on)
4. Continue holding button until “OIL SERVICE” or “INSPECTION” appears
5. Release and press button again briefly
6. Display should show “RESET” — hold button to confirm
