DIY: Window Regulator Replacement

Window regulator failure is one of the most common E46 issues. The cable-driven regulators fail when the cable breaks or pulls off the drum.

  • Window drops into door
  • Grinding or clicking noise
  • Window operates slowly or unevenly
  • Window doesn’t move at all
  • Window regulator (front left: 61 31 8 375 535)
  • Window regulator (front right: 61 31 8 381 021)
  • New rivets or nuts/bolts for mounting
  1. Remove door panel (pry clips, disconnect switches)
  2. Peel back vapor barrier carefully (reuse)
  3. Support window in UP position with tape
  4. Disconnect regulator motor connector
  5. Drill out regulator mounting rivets (3-4 per regulator)
  6. Disconnect window from regulator channel
  7. Remove old regulator through access holes
  8. Install new regulator, secure with bolts (or new rivets)
  9. Reconnect window to regulator channel
  10. Reconnect motor connector
  11. Test window operation before reassembling door
  12. Reattach vapor barrier
  13. Reinstall door panel
