DIY: Window Regulator Replacement
Section titled “DIY: Window Regulator Replacement”Window regulator failure is one of the most common E46 issues. The cable-driven regulators fail when the cable breaks or pulls off the drum.
Symptoms
Section titled “Symptoms”- Window drops into door
- Grinding or clicking noise
- Window operates slowly or unevenly
- Window doesn’t move at all
Parts Needed
Section titled “Parts Needed”- Window regulator (front left: 61 31 8 375 535)
- Window regulator (front right: 61 31 8 381 021)
- New rivets or nuts/bolts for mounting
Procedure
Section titled “Procedure”- Remove door panel (pry clips, disconnect switches)
- Peel back vapor barrier carefully (reuse)
- Support window in UP position with tape
- Disconnect regulator motor connector
- Drill out regulator mounting rivets (3-4 per regulator)
- Disconnect window from regulator channel
- Remove old regulator through access holes
- Install new regulator, secure with bolts (or new rivets)
- Reconnect window to regulator channel
- Reconnect motor connector
- Test window operation before reassembling door
- Reattach vapor barrier
- Reinstall door panel
