Rear Control Arms
Section titled “Rear Control Arms”The E46 rear multi-link suspension uses five separate links per side. Understanding each link’s function is key to diagnosing handling issues.
Rear Suspension Links
Section titled “Rear Suspension Links”- Trailing arm (central arm): Main structural link, carries spring/shock
- Upper control arm: Controls camber
- Lower control arm: Controls camber and lateral location
- Toe link (integral link): Controls rear toe
- Camber link: Fine camber control
Common Wear Items
Section titled “Common Wear Items”Rear Trailing Arm Bushings (RTAB)
Section titled “Rear Trailing Arm Bushings (RTAB)”- Most common rear suspension wear item
- Symptoms: Clunking, rear-end instability, tire wear
- Replace with: OEM rubber, Powerflex polyurethane, or BimmerWorld Delrin
- Torque: 110 Nm at ride height
Rear Upper Control Arm
Section titled “Rear Upper Control Arm”- Eccentric bolt allows camber adjustment
- Torque: 77 Nm
Toe Link

- Worn bushings cause unstable highway tracking
