Subframe Reinforcement
Section titled “Subframe Reinforcement”Reinforcing the rear subframe mounting points is a common preventive measure and repair for the E46. This is considered essential for track cars and recommended for all E46s.
Reinforcement Plate Options

- Vince @ VAC Motorsports: Weld-in plates (most thorough)
- Turner Motorsport: Bolt-on reinforcement kit
- DIY steel plates: Custom fabricated, welded
Procedure Overview
Section titled “Procedure Overview”Bolt-On Reinforcement
Section titled “Bolt-On Reinforcement”- Remove rear subframe (or partially lower)
- Clean mounting point areas
- Apply reinforcement plates with supplied hardware
- Re-install subframe with new bushings
- Torque to specification
- Full rear alignment required
Weld-In Reinforcement
Section titled “Weld-In Reinforcement”- Remove rear subframe completely
- Clean and prep floor pan
- Weld reinforcement plates to floor pan
- Seam seal and paint
- New subframe bushings recommended
- Re-install subframe, torque to spec
- Full alignment required
Subframe Bushing Options
Section titled “Subframe Bushing Options”- OEM rubber: Stock comfort, allow flex
- Powerflex: Polyurethane, firmer
- Solid aluminum: Track use, full rigidity, most NVH
