Clutch Hydraulics
The clutch is hydraulically actuated using a master cylinder (at the pedal) and slave cylinder (at the transmission bell housing).
Clutch Master Cylinder
Section titled “Clutch Master Cylinder”- Located at the firewall, connected to the clutch pedal
- Shares brake fluid reservoir with the braking system
- Failure symptoms: soft or spongy clutch pedal
Clutch Slave Cylinder
Section titled “Clutch Slave Cylinder”- Mounted on the transmission bell housing
- Replace preventively during clutch replacement
Clutch Delay Valve (CDV)
Section titled “Clutch Delay Valve (CDV)”The E46 has a clutch delay valve that slows clutch engagement.
