Clutch Hydraulics

The clutch is hydraulically actuated using a master cylinder (at the pedal) and slave cylinder (at the transmission bell housing).

  • Located at the firewall, connected to the clutch pedal
  • Shares brake fluid reservoir with the braking system
  • Failure symptoms: soft or spongy clutch pedal
  • Mounted on the transmission bell housing
  • Replace preventively during clutch replacement

The E46 has a clutch delay valve that slows clutch engagement.
