Differential Fluid Change

Regular differential fluid changes protect the ring and pinion gears from premature wear.

Fluid Specification

• Open diff: BMW SAF-XO 75W-90 (or Redline 75W-90 GL-5)
• LSD: BMW SAF-XLS 75W-140 (or Redline 75W-140 with LSD additive)
• Capacity: 1.0L

Procedure

1. Raise the rear of the vehicle on jack stands
2. Remove the fill plug FIRST (14mm Allen)
3. Remove the drain plug (14mm Allen) and drain fluid
4. Reinstall drain plug (70 Nm with metal seal ring; 60 Nm with rubber O-ring)
5. Pump new fluid through fill hole until it overflows
6. Reinstall fill plug (70 Nm with metal seal ring; 60 Nm with rubber O-ring)

Interval

Every 60,000 miles for open differentials; every 30,000 miles for LSD units.
