Shift Linkage

The shift linkage transfers driver input from the shift lever to the transmission selector mechanism. Over time, the plastic and rubber bushings in the linkage wear, causing a vague or sloppy shift feel.

  • Shift lever (inside cabin)
  • Carrier bushing (at base of shift lever)
  • Selector rod (connects to transmission)
  • Selector rod joint (pivot point)
  • Transmission selector shaft
  • Sloppy or imprecise shift feel (worn bushings)
  • Difficulty finding gears (misadjusted or worn linkage)
  • Shift lever play (carrier bushing failure)

Replacing the shift linkage bushings with upgraded polyurethane or Delrin bushings dramatically improves shift precision. This is one of the most popular modifications for manual E46s.
